FUNDAMENTALS OF ORIENTAL MEDICINE

Michael Gaeta, L.Ac.

An ancient approach to treating illness and building health with natural medicine.

BASIC PRINCIPLES:

  • The energy system underlies the physical body, mind, emotions and spirit.
  • If the energy is balanced, the person is healthy. Health is a state of wellness and inner peace.
  • If there is an energy imbalance, it will manifest as physical symptoms.
  • Treating the energy system addresses the cause of illness, not merely the symptoms.

THE ORIENTAL HEALING ARTS

  • There are three major healing arts in Oriental medicine:
Bodywork Therapy, Acupuncture, and Herbal & Diet Therapy
  • One aim of these therapies is to rebalance the energy system so the body can heal itself.

ORIENTAL BODYWORK THERAPY

  • Manual manipulation of body tissues to rebalance the energy system.
  • Relaxing, but primarily used to treat a wide range of health problems, and maintain balance.

ACUPUNCTURE

  • The insertion of fine sterile needles at specific locations to rebalance the energy system.
  • Can treat dozens of health conditions; also restores mental & emotional well-being.

CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE & DIETARY THERAPY

  • The use of natural substances to rebalance the energy system.
  • Chinese herbs have been used for thousands of years to treat illness and build health.
  • The substances used are mostly plant parts. Some are minerals and animal products.
  • Herbs are safe and effective when prescribed by a trained practitioner on the basis of an individual assessment.
  • Most herbs should not be self-prescribed, or taken on the recommendation of an untrained person.
